ManageEngine SDP vs
Jira Service Management
Objective 2026 comparison - numbers and facts from real implementations
Two of the most popular enterprise helpdesks face off. We compare without marketing - just numbers and facts from real projects. We have implemented both. Here is which one we would pick for which kind of company.
Where this article comes from
We implemented Jira Service Management at an authorized premium car dealer: around 200 users, several branches. After a dozen or so months, costs started to rise visibly: Atlassian Access, Marketplace plugins, training for new people. The client decided to migrate to ManageEngine SDP. The article is based on that real migration and a cost comparison.

ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus - who is it for?
ManageEngine SDP is the right pick when you already have Active Directory (SDP syncs natively, without extra Atlassian modules), you work in a regulated industry (banking, insurance, manufacturing) and GDPR requires data on-premise, you have 30-300 technicians, and your team does not use Jira Software. We cover when SDP wins against ServiceNow more fully in our article ManageEngine vs ServiceNow 2026. If you want a precise license cost analysis, also see ManageEngine ServiceDesk Plus pricing.
A concrete difference: Asset Management and CMDB are built into ManageEngine SDP at no extra cost. Atlassian offers Jira Assets (formerly Insight) as part of JSM plans, available from the Standard plan. JSM Cloud Standard costs from around 20 USD/agent/month on annual billing, Premium significantly more. On top of that there can be a separate fee for Atlassian Guard (SSO, AD sync). Check current rates in Atlassian's price list.
Jira Service Management - who is it for?
Jira SM makes sense in a few specific situations: you work in a software house or digital agency where Jira Software is already the developer standard; the IT team must collaborate with projects in Jira and use Confluence; you need very flexible workflows (different service channels with separate routing rules); your users already have Atlassian Guard (formerly Atlassian Access, SSO, Multi-Workspace) and you do not want to pay extra for AD sync.
Hidden Jira costs: when planning the budget, include items beyond the JSM subscription itself - Atlassian Guard (SSO, AD sync) is a separate per-user fee, and advanced reporting (SLA tracking, trends) often requires paid plugins from the Marketplace. Jira Assets (CMDB) is available from the Standard plan. Check current Guard and plugin rates in the Atlassian price list and the Marketplace.
TCO comparison - what to watch for
We do not give specific figures here because ManageEngine prices on-premise individually and Jira's cost depends on agent count, plan and add-ons. Below we show how the cost relationship works out in a typical project:
| Component | ManageEngine SDP | Jira SM Cloud |
|---|---|---|
| License / subscription | On-premise (individual quote) or Cloud; Free edition | Per-agent subscription, growing year on year |
| Implementation | Usually lower effort | Often higher (workflow configuration) |
| Plugins / Add-ons | Key features built in | Some features are paid add-ons (Guard, Marketplace) |
| Polish support | Partner in Poland | Atlassian online support (EN) |
| Multi-year TCO | Usually lower | Usually higher |
Specific figures depend on technician count, edition and add-ons - calculate TCO for your own scale using the current price lists: ManageEngine and Atlassian.
Case study - premium brand dealer
Why we moved from Jira to ManageEngine after 18 months
Client: client from premium distribution sector - NDA, 200+ users, several branches. The client chose Jira SM because of the low entry price. After a dozen or so months, the costs of Atlassian Access, Marketplace plugins and training for new staff clearly exceeded the originally assumed budget. After migrating to ManageEngine SDP, the client got full AD integration, automatic SLAs and no dependence on third-party plugins. A detailed SDP vs Jira feature comparison is in our article ManageEngine SDP vs Jira Service Management. For more on typical TCO see our ManageEngine vs Freshservice vs ServiceNow overview.
